It is common to see medication commercials during prime time TV. While some of us take a bathroom break or quick trip to the fridge, those who stay notice a footprint-like segment in the end talking about possible side effects.
Some of these side effects have become national fodder for comedians. But this isn’t funny. As a matter of fact, they sometimes make taking the drug not even worth it. Ratio of dangerous vs helpful sometimes has a negative balance. And again, this is according to the publicly available information. But what about facts we don’t know? Are we supposed to be told everything?
Surprisingly, the fact is that we are definitely left in the dark most of the times according to the recent article in the Wall Street Journal http://online.wsj.com/article/NA_WSJ_PUB:SB122903390105599607.html
Take for example Viagra. Looking into the list of side effects we immediately see this one: “please see a doctor, if your erection lasts for more than four hours”. There can be a lot of damage done during these four hours!
We continue to read the list: nausea, vomiting, dizziness. How can you say that the drug is making you feel better, if its making you so sick that you can’t even feel the good effects of it.
Here is the perfect example: There is a new birth control pill available on the market that allows you to skip your period. It’s marketed towards younger women, with a statement saying that if you are not looking to get pregnant – you don’t need to have your period every month. Let’s say that we consider this drug being beneficial and will now turn to negative side effects questions.
One of the top side effect of this medication – possible deadly blood clots. But there is another one, extremely puzzling: according to it, this medication can cause spotting, as heavy and as long as your regular period. Use your common sense: does this just mean you are still getting your period? What’s the purpose of the medication then? If it’s giving you cramps, making you sick, and making you spot as heavy as your period, why are you taking a drug?
Sometimes medication can hurt you in one way, while claiming to help you in another.
Gastrointestinal medicines, like acid lowering drugs, act in such way that they prevent absorption and digestion because there is almost no hydrochloric acid left in your stomach. When there is no hydrochloric acid, magnesium and other vitally important nutrients and electrolytes cannot be absorbed. This causes another sort of problem, which scientists and drug researches have never thought of. It was found that many people who suffer from cardiac arrest were magnesium deficient! Could this be connected?
Any medication, that makes a change in the way your gut works, can do harm. Take for example something as simple as Tylenol 3. Have you ever heard of it? Of course you have. It’s one of the most commonly prescribed pain relief medications in the country. But did you know that it could be toxic because it reduces gut motility and that means more toxins will remain in your body. It messes up detoxification. Even constipation is not benign!
The bottom line is that you should seek holistic methods for solving some of your most common health problems. Getting to the bottom of a problem is the best way to fix it. The symptoms are only there because of the problem and it will only help you in the long run to cure it.
