Genetech scientists recently reported the discovery of two genes linked to Lupus: BLK and ITGAM.

BLK is believed to be responsible for one part of the immune system — B cells, and ITGAN ia responsible for T cells.

These are two out of about 10 genes related to lupus. This discovery should improve diagnosis and better prediction of response to drugs.

So far, one of Genetech drugs Rituxan, experimentally used for lupus treatment, was linked to death of two patients. Both died of brain infections from taking the drug.
