How to prevent age related blindness

Did you know that 8 million Americans are suffering from blindness, secondary to age-related macular degeneration? In fact macular degeneration is the leading cause of age related blindness in the developed world.

Experts estimate the prevalence of this disease will increase by 50 percent by 2020.  The blindness is caused by debris deposition between the retina and Bruch’s membrane, with age.

Is it possible to do something about it? What can we do to decrease the rate of debris deposition? The good news is that the daily use of antioxidants can decrease the risk as well as reduce the rate of progression of age related macular degeneration.

As per the New England Journal of Medicine, June 12, 2008, the suggested regimen is vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin E 400 U beta carotene 15 mg zinc oxide 80 mg cupric oxide 2 mg. But that’s not all. It was found that smoking as well as increased weight also increase the risk of age related macular degeneration. Therefore smoking cessation and calorie intake reduction is advised. Should anybody have any ideas about how to decrease the risk of blindness secondary to age related macular degeneration, please let me know.
