We are all at risk for some kind of cancer. It seems to be the disease we can never get a grip on. We can work out, we can eat right, we can stay healthy and drink water and take vitamins. And maybe one of our relatives in our family tree had it, and boom, there we are, with nothing we could have done to prevent it.To make it simple, cancer causes can be divided into two main categories: irreversible and reversible.
Irreversible causes are inherited. We can do little about our genes, but sometimes even a little can help. For example, trying to fight colon cancer with frequent colonoscopies, or inherited abnormal estrogen metabolism: which can increase the risk of breast cancer. By some simple measures like exercise and eating broccoli we can reduce the risk of breast cancer in this case.
What about reversible causes? What can we do? Reversible causes can be divided as follows:
1. Carcinogen consumption. Carcinogens are the substances that cause cancer or promote it. Example: tobacco or asbestos. Broiling and barbecuing is also related to carcinogen formation. Pollution is another threat. Part of the solution can be to avoid processed food, do not smoke, do not over-heat food, try to eat organic food, drink enough water.
2. Nutritional problems. Most important – obesity, which is linked to breast, endometrial, colon, kidney and esophageal cancers. Another problem: lack of essential nutrients. Example; vitamin D, which is believed to be playing an important role in cancer prevention. Solution to the problem: avoid processed food, lose weight, take necessary supplements, exercise often, get enough sleep.
3. Infections. Example: papilloma virus or hepatitis B virus infection. Solution: proper vaccination, safe sex, hand washing, contact precautions, personal hygiene.
Isn’t it simple? So try! And good luck!
