Heart Muscle Repair May Be Feasible With Periostin

Scientists have found a new protein responsible for myocardial repair and regeneration — periostin. This protein is normally produced by cardiac cells to stimulate repair and new vessel formation. Using a recombinant form of periostin for repairing heart damage by myocardial infarction might be very promising.

When human hearts are injured, it is almost impossible for healthy tissues to regrow, but scientists, placing a patch soaked in the protein over the injury caused the cells to begin dividing again.
