Our heart is one of the most important part of our body because it brings oxygen and other nutrients to the rest of our body.  Without the heart working - life is impossible.  Therefore it’s so important to keep your heart healthy. However this is not so easy, because coronary arthery disease, caused by heart blood vessels clogging, is the number one killer in the US.  Why? Because is causes heart attacks as well as heart failure and sudden cardiac death. When statins were invented including blockbuster Lipitor, scientists claimed, that by the year 2000 heart attacks would disappear. But it didn’t happen. Why?
There are 2 main reasons why drugs did not work as well as we thought:
1.    Cholesterol and triglycerides  are not the only risk factors for coronary athery disease. Here are some other risk factors, which are not checked routinely:
homocysteine

fibrinogen

lipoprotein A

C reactive protein
2.    Drugs may not work as expected.  For example statins decrease cholesterol which is good, but they were linked to increased lipiprotein A levels, which is another risk factor for coronary arthery disease.  This is not good at all! Another example: Vytorin, linked to increased risk for cancer.  No good at all!

The good news is: you do not need drugs in the majority of cases.  For example medical studies recently proved, that fish oil is more effective then the statin Crestor. Think about it: it took us more then 30 years ( statins were discovered in around 1971 )  to figure it out, that expensive and dangerous drugs are less effective, then cheap and safe fish oil! What do you think about this?

heart, heart disease, coronary artery disease, crestor, statin, fish oil, cholesterol, heart attack, prevention
