Hair loss or alopecia is a common problem. Not only for men, the problem affects women often, too. As a matter of fact, approximately one third of women have experienced significant hair loss during their lifetime. What are the causes of female hair loss?
One of the most frequent causes of female fair loss is female pattern alopecia. It is sometimes called androgenic alopecia, though the role of androgens remains uncertain. Another common cause is stress, which could be emotional or physical, for example after surgery or severe illness. Drugs may be the cause of hair loss, as well. The classic example is chemotherapy for cancer. Fungal infection of the scalp can cause hair trouble. Alopecia can be caused also by such common medical problems like iron deficiency or hypothyroidism. Such uncommon diseases like discoid lupus may be the cause of hair loss.
First things first, we need to find the right diagnosis. Full blood work needs to be done including, but not limited to, hormone levels, biochemistry, inflammation markers, etc. Sometimes microscopic analysis of the hair is needed, if fungal infection is to be ruled out.
