Statins are excellent drugs to lower cholesterol. Crestor is one of those. When they were introduced it into the medical practice, it was thought to revolutionize heart disease treatment.
Several studies even suggested that statins can prolong survival. They even thought that Lipitor use can almost eradicate chances of a heart attack. However, it has never happened. The reason for that might be the fact that statin use may be linked to an increase of lipoprotein (a) level, which is another risk factor for heart disease. So it looks like we are switching from one risk factor to another.
And then recently, we got slammed with some more bad news about the wonder-drug: Crestor, which is a statin also, is no good for heart failure. The explanation: statins decrease the level of coenzyme Q10, which is crucially important for mitochondrial function. If mitochondrias do not work there is no energy for heart muscle. No energy and the heart cannot pump blood properly.
Bottom line: we should think twice, before starting statin therapy. Maybe diet is better? Or hormone replacement therapy?
