Testosterone: new horizons for prostate cancer prevention
Friday, November 7th, 2008Even though we’ve all heard about prostate cancer, we still don’t know much about the its cause. No doubt, age is a risk factor as well as family history and diet. A new study from Mearini L, Costantini E, Zucchi A, Mearini E, Bini V, Cottini E Porena M Department of Urology, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy shed light on the real reason why men are in danger of prostate cancer. Low testosterone was linked to prostate cancer in this study (note – consider adding a link to, or naming, this study). This finding explains why age is a risk factor: our testosterone goes down over the years. It also explains the importance of family history: low testosterone may run in families. Now it is clear why a diet with high fat content is a risk factor for prostate cancer: fat increases enzyme aromatase activity which transformes testosterone into estrogen, thereby stealing testosterone from its target.
